La caída y destrucción de Jerusalén y del Templo que un día había llenado la gloria del Señor —la crueldad de los sufrimientos padecidos durante el asedio y la violencia y carnicería del ataque final— significan para los judíos el fin de una era.
En cierto sentido es el fin del mundo, un mundo donde se podía confiar que el Señor moraría eternamente en Sion y que la dinastía de David reinaría para siempre, conforme a las promesas divinas que había escuchado su fundador. Si la descendencia de David se había prometido tan duradera como el mundo mismo, entonces su derrota y desaparición —y la quema y destrucción total del Templo del Señor— equivalen, efectivamente, al fin del mundo. El futuro a partir de ahora, entonces, es un futuro más allá del mundo conocido hasta aquí. Nada tiene que ver con el mundo «normal», con sus promesas, su Dios y su estabilidad. La feminidad y masculinidad, entonces, no eran conceptos neutros sino que llevaban parejos la debilidad e inconstancia moral —la culpabilidad— en el caso de la mujer; la virtud, constancia y rectitud, en el caso del varón. Concebida la virginidad femenina como un bien absoluto, cuya pérdida a destiempo supone una mancha permanente en la honra de una chica y de toda su familia, en estos tres capítulos medulares de Lamentaciones, la población entera de Jerusalén queda feminizada y culpabilizada en última instancia de su «penetración», que la privará para siempre jamás de la honra de una casta virginidad.
Sin embargo los otros dos capítulos de Lamentaciones contienen reflexiones que ayudan a sobrellevar la gravedad de lo ocurrido. Por lo menos, contemplan la posibilidad de un futuro aceptable, ofreciendo así una pequeña chispa de esperanza y por tanto de consolación.
En los capítulos 3 y 5, entonces, el autor ha recuperado la masculinidad de su perspectiva. Quizá sea porque aquí no parece que tengamos ya la inmediatez de la batalla y destrucción de Jerusalén y su Templo, sino el testimonio de un pueblo que lleva ya cierto tiempo desarraigado, desperdigado por el mundo y rememorando su terrible derrota. Aunque esta condición es también triste, no es tan desesperada como el día después de la batalla. Entonces, aunque el Señor sigue poniendo trabas a la prosperidad y la paz de su pueblo, ya es posible recordar que es también misericordioso y fiel. «Porque no rechaza para siempre el Señor, antes bien, si aflige, también se compadecerá según su gran misericordia» (Lm 3,31 BA). Es ya posible afirmar también que «tú, oh Señor, reinas para siempre, tu trono permanece de generación en generación» (Lm 5,19 BA). Lo cual indica haber caído en la cuenta de que el trono del Señor siempre ha estado en el cielo y no en ninguna ciudad ni ningún templo.
[El libro de Lamentaciones es anónimo. Tradicionalmente se ha atribuido a Jeremías, contribuyendo así a su fama como «el profeta llorón». Pero el libro de Jeremías es muy distinto a Lamentaciones; aquel es un libro lleno de esperanza y promesa a pesar de sus circunstancias trágicas, éste es de una tristeza incandescente.]
